I have been making donuts since I was 5 years old. It was a specialty of my Grandma’s and whenever we would go over to her house, we would make donuts together! Now, back then we would always fry our donuts. Baking donuts just wasn’t really a thing. But now that I have tested out recipes for baked donuts, I believe I have found a recipe that is willing to compete!

These are quick and easy to prepare, made with simple ingredients. The dough is the perfect consistency, moist and definitely not dry. Then they are topped with a healthier glaze, no corn syrup here!

I will mention these donuts are not overly sweet. Which I personally like as it helps balance it with the chocolate glaze. So if you are looking for a super sugary donut this may not be the recipe for you. But that being said they are still absolutely delicious!

Tip One: Don’t have butter milk? Make your own!

Here are some substitutes for buttermilk:

  • 1 cup buttermilk = 1 tablespoon white vinegar and enough milk to measure 1 cup (let sit 5 minutes before using)
  • 1 cup buttermilk = 1 tablespoon lemon juice and enough milk to measure 1 cup (let sit 5 minutes before using)
  • 1 cup buttermilk = 1 cup plain yogurt
  • 1 cup buttermilk = 1 3/4 teaspoons cream of tarter and 1 cup of milk (let sit 5 minutes before using)

Tip Two: Pipe your dough into your pan.

This helps you get a nice uniform donut. I just use a large zip lock bag and then cut the end off of it. You can also use a piping bag if you have one. The dough is kind of thick so it will be difficult to spoon in the pan, but if you can’t pipe it it will totally still work. Your donuts just may not be as uniform.
